For decades, occupational safety professionals have focused on controlling physical hazards. Organizations have invested heavily in machine guarding, fall protection, industrial hygiene, and process safety. These efforts have significantly reduced workplace injuries, but incidents still occur despite stronger compliance programs.

A growing body of research points to another contributing factor. Chronic stress quietly affects how employees think, communicate, assess risk, and make decisions. Unlike an exposed machine or an unguarded opening, stress is difficult to detect during routine inspections. Yet its effects on human performance can be just as serious.
