H2S, The ‘Silent Killer’: How Annual H2S Training Saves Lives

Known as the “Silent Killer,” H2S is highly flammable and toxic, even at low concentrations. It can easily build up in low-lying areas and confined spaces, and can quickly overcome unprepared workers.

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is one of the leading causes of gas-inhalation deaths in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), H2S caused 46 worker deaths between 2011 and 2017.

Known as the “Silent Killer,” H2S is highly flammable and toxic, even at low concentrations. It can easily build up in low-lying areas and confined spaces, and can quickly overcome unprepared workers.

The best way to ensure your workforce has the knowledge to recognize, avoid, and contain this deadly poison is annual H2S training, recommended by ANSI/ASSP Z390.1. Anyone with the potential for exposure to H2S should be sufficiently trained to recognize, understand, and control the hazards associated with the gas.

H2S Safety Training Class: What to Expect?

H2S training saves lives. Going beyond just H2S awareness, H2S training provides workers with the fundamental measures needed to recognize and prevent H2S poisoning, so the sources of gas can be eliminated when possible.

For times when the gas source cannot be eliminated, H2S safety training teaches workers how to control and contain the exposure with engineering and administrative controls, and safe work practices. Workers are also trained on the most effective personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent H2S poisoning, leading to a safer worksite and industry overall.

H2S safety training not only saves lives but keeps your business in compliance with the ANSI Z390.1 standard and OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134.

The 4 W’s of the Veriforce H2S Clear for Energy Training Program

Developed by industry experts, including members of the ANSI Z390.1 standard committee, the Veriforce H2S Clear for Energy training program prepares you to work in a comprehensive and standardized program that covers everything from the buddy system and characteristics of H2S gas in a facility to PPE and workplace safety procedures.

Wondering if your workers need the Veriforce H2S Clear for Energy training program? Consider the following 4 W’s:

Who? Visitors on any sites where H2S may be present should receive full in-person, instructor-led annual training.

What? Abbreviated refresher training is no longer a valid course option, according to ASSI. Training must be 3 to 4 hours long. Valid training certification must be provided when reporting to a jobsite.

Where? The Veriforce H2S Clear for Energy training program is available in-person and through Instructor-Led Distance Learning. Online training/computer-based training is not recommended by ANSI.

When? Courses and certifications should be renewed annually.

Shared Responsibility, Defined Roles of H2S Training

When it comes to H2S safety, everyone has to do their part to maintain a safe environment. The primary focus has to be on protecting the health and safety of the workers, but this is a shared responsibility between the employers and the employees.

To date, there’s no vertical OSHA standard that governs H2S safety. The ANSI Z390.1 offers best practices for all employers and their workers. Guard yourself and your workers against this deadly poison with annual H2S training annually.
